Montessori education is about students learning through doing relevant, meaningful activities. Our elementary and middle school students had a brain storming session to design a shirt to be sold, along with hot chocolate and lemonade, with all profits being donated to Haiti Relief Organizations such as: The American Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, and the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Shirts were designed, evaluated and a final product chosen. Funding was an issue, so students devised a presentation and contacted local businesses to solicit funding sponsors. Before we knew it, we had a screen printed t-shirt, with local business sponsors and locations throughout the community where we are setting up to take donations for the shirts, hot chocolate and lemonade! What an amazing experience and all in two days! Helping others provided an opportunity for our students to learn and practice organizational, planning and problem solving skills they will use in future academic and professional endeavors.
